Blog as inner thought
2026-08-08
I used to treat “blog” and “news” as near-synonyms with different CSS. Length, polish, whether there was an RSS feed. That was the wrong axis.
The useful divide is which way the thought faces.
News faces outward. Something entered the shared record: we shipped, we opened, a partner said yes, a tool joined the repertoire. The reader’s job is to notice and maybe act. The org (or another actor) is the subject, even when the headline omits our name because the site already supplies it.
Blog faces inward. Ideas, ideals, philosophy, craft tutorials, working theories. There is often a small social component—not performance metrics, but thinking in public: here is how I am trying to see this. The posts I used to write that felt like “blog” were rarely press releases. They were claims, framings, how-tos with a point of view.
Changelog is a third thing. It is the ledger. Do not dress a bullet list as news, and do not pretend a ship notice is an essay.
Quick test:
- Announcing that a thing exists in the world → news
- Thinking through a claim, ideal, or how to see → blog
House title rules still apply on top of that stance (Titles as orientation). Stance chooses the channel; titles choose the sentence.
I am writing this down so future-me, coworkers, and agents stop arguing genre by vibes.
